English 3 Summative Capstone Research Project Reflection

In my English 3 class, we did a Capstone Presentation project that articulated my experience and to showcase the learning I acquired throughout the year to the class. For this project, I had the ability to choose any topic that is researchable and of interest to me. I was able to delve deeper into my research paper topic I completed back in February of 2018.

This project was done to present the process and results of a semester working on the Capstone Project in a compelling, reflective and sophisticated way using multimedia to support my presentation. The purpose is to showcase my passions and interests to my classmates by researching information about my topic and presenting the information in an engaging manner through a multimedia presentation that showcased my
expertise on the topic. The length of this presentation was six to eight minutes and was presented to my classmates and instructor.

This project had four goals that had to be met in order to pass. The first goal of this project was to present information, findings, and supporting evidence, conveying a clear and distinct perspective, such that listeners can follow the line of reasoning, alternative or opposing perspectives are addressed, and the organization, development, substance, and style are appropriate to purpose, audience, and a range of formal and informal tasks. The second goal was to make strategic use of digital media in presentations to enhance understanding of findings, reasoning, and evidence and to add interest. The third goal was to adapt speech to a variety of contexts and tasks, demonstrating a command of formal English when indicated or appropriate. The fourth and final goal was to provide a conclusion that follows from and reflects on what is experienced, observed, or resolved over the course of the narrative. Becuase of my hard work and extensive research I did, I was able to obtain an A on this project.

For this project, I research a controversial issue that is highly debated in the US. That topic is the Minimum Wage. By doing extensive research on this topic, I learned lots of new information on the minimum wage, the pros and cons of the topic, and what our lawmakers think of this issue.

Here is my reflection on my Capstone Presentation:

  1. I think I did well on my Capstone Presentation. I provided an introduction that intrigued the audience while establishing the topic by starting my presentation with a statistic. That statistic was 2.6 million workers with wages at or below the federal minimum made up 2.7 percent of all hourly paid workers in the United States.
  2. I provided an in-depth reflection about the experience and did lots of in-depth research to bolster both sides of the issue with factual information.
  3. I presented the information clearly and effectively to the point that your audience was engaged in the topic and were not confused. I achieved this by making everything easy to understand.
  4. I presented my information, findings, and supporting evidence, to convey a clear and distinct perspective.
  5. I demonstrated well-placed inflection and gestures that created an engaging delivery style indicative of advance preparation
  6. I made sure my presentation slides included grammar that was appropriate and correct.
  7. I believe my presentation integrated multimedia and visual displays to clarify information, strengthen claims and evidence, and add interest.
  8. Some presentation techniques I can incorporate into my next presentation are including more visuals to accompany the research such as charts to visually present data.
  9. I wish that I would have added more charts and research to make my argument stronger.
  10. If I could present my presentation again I wouldn’t add more than 3 bullet points per slide to keep the slides from becoming overloaded.
  11. Now that I have reflected on my presentation, I now know what I need to do to make my next presentation better than the last.
